<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the things about being Australian is our Christmas would confuse those from the Northern Hemisphere. We get sold that traditional Christmas vision - snow, fireplaces, snuggling under blankets on a sleigh ride, hot cocoa and really ugly sweaters, but it doesn't translate for us! </div>
<br />
The closest we get to snow is well, the air conditioning blasting as we watch White Christmas. We build sand men, eat prawns and oysters and lobster, play backyard cricket, run in the sprinkler, and have to wait until 8.30pm for it even be dark enough to see Christmas lights...<br />
<br />
And I'm not complaining. I'm really not. I'm actually fond of this curiosity. Though, I still laugh at how confused my brother's Swedish friend was when he spent a summer Christmas with us! His face when the platter of prawns appeared was priceless, though I'm not even sure if it was solely because of the appearance of cold prawns, or their sheer size in comparison to Swedish ones.<br />
<br />
So when I saw this snowflake brooch from Luxulite I thought, yeah, I will actually wear that in winter and save the snowflakes for all my navy sweaters. But then it came to me, how well it would match my beloved 50s rose print skirt! So, here is my summery take on snowflakes and traditional Northern Christmas style. Which, really, suits my icy Christmas tree, doesn't it?<br />
<br />
And never mind we are in the middle of a heat wave!<br />
<br />

<b><br /></b>
So, the tree is up! I am always amazed how this takes so many weeks, but I guess when you have a tree this big and decorate it like this it's inevitable. Last year's tree was beautiful, but I think this year's is definitely even better ("You deserve an award for this tree," to quote my brother).<br />
<br />
This year the theme is beautiful champagne, blush, gold and touches of red, with a distinct forest vibe thanks to our excess of birds and animals. It feels a lot less structured in comparison to last year, with wild twigs and natural elements coming in and out of the tree, and icy details frosting the very edges (as opposed to a flocked tree which would be just a bit too snowy for our colour palette right now). It's hard to translate in a photo, but this tree has so many elements you only see with the naked eye once you get up close. I feel like my camera just flattens the effect out so much! The blush ribbon winds through the centre of the tree, while the gold and green ribbon gently undulates in and out. Add some insane feather balls and this tree just feels so foresty! Mum and I definitely plan to keep expanding upon this theme, because even with so much on the tree we know we could have infinitely more - haha!<br />
<br />
Of course the tree takes on a whole new feel when the sun goes down - check out my Instagram to see the tree at night and during the day and basically, just lots of spam!<br />
<br />
Wishing you a peaceful, wonderful December,<br />

Ok, so this isn't technically a 'stocking stuffer' because you can't physically put it in a stocking, but it's one of my favourite budget gifts that can be given to anyone around the globe and brings 25 days of pure joy. The <a href="https://www.jacquielawson.com/advent" target="_blank">Jacquie Lawson Advent calendar</a> is one of my December highlights, with each day bringing a new activity or gorgeous illustrated video. Last year's theme was a British seaside village at Christmas, this year it's a gorgeous Alpine Village but you can order either! And keep an eye out for secret little surprises that you click on and they interact, but you have to hunt hard! The advent calendar is just $4, but you can order more and it gets cheaper.<br />

This is legit one of my favourite products from <a href="https://au.lush.com/products/christmas">Lush</a> - it makes me feel calm and rested, and I find it best used in the evening before I slap on my Sleepy body cream *ahem*. <a href="https://au.lush.com/products/christmas/twilight-0">Twilight</a> is part of the Christmas release, so make sure to snag yourself a bottle before it vanishes, it's just $19.95 for the 250g bottle.<br />

It might seem like an odd idea at first, but giving the gift of meditation is an investment in someone's wellbeing, and who the hell doesn't want everyone around them to feel better? If you mention meditation these days, nearly everyone chimes in with the <a href="https://www.headspace.com/giftcheckout/setup" target="_blank">Headspace app</a>! And with good reason. There's a guided meditation for everything from stress to pain to sleep!<br />

I was given a sample of the <a href="https://www.bondiscrubs.com.au/" target="_blank">Bondi Scrubs</a> coffee scrub and I was like a crazy woman in the shower polishing myself, and inadvertently spraying coffee all over the shower, and making people touch my really soft skin ("No, feel ittttt!"). Bear with me, this so isn't as morbid as it looks! This is actually a memento mori style eternity band. <br />
Some people are passionate about sport, or space travel, or wine, or dinosaurs, or insects. My passion (other than Welsh mythology and tea) is of course.... shoes, and I wore my "team colours" today - shoe earrings, a shoe top, and shoes... yeah I added the and shoes and thought well duh, but, pointing out the obvious is sometimes necessary to create a list. <br />
<br />
This t-shirt cracks me up, because of course I need to remind myself sometimes to keep calm when my workload is a little nuts, and there's a lot going on with me personally too (like a ridiculous pelvic/back/shoulder issue and a little baby dog who doesn't feel well). When the make up is off lately I've got some epic dark under eye circles going on (briefly remedied with this insanely expensive eye cream sample I got and concealer) and I can't seem to fall asleep before 2am, and then won't stay asleep for a full eight hours. My mind is full of thoughts - some creative, some problem solving, some from fantasy land, others rooted in insecurity and upset. <br />
<br />
I try a lot of things to get my mind to settle - tossing and turning myself into a burrito, a wheat bag, Sleepy body cream, breathing exercises, mindfulness activities like colouring in, turning off electrical devices at least half an hour before bed, drinking chamomile tea, doing gentle stretches. Nothing seems to be helping with my monkey mind. <br />
<br />
At least in life there's fun things like rose print skirts and fun jewellery, and sweet nylon scarves to dress up a tired face and long Friday. And shoes, my beloved shoes. This pair of wedges I've had ages and I've forgotten how comfortable they are, being a cork base. They always seem so specific in my mind with their colours and print, yet I think in this case they really work.<br />
<br />
Shoes have the power to transform an outfit, this we all know. But they also have the power to shape how we feel about ourselves and our environment. We've all had those days when our shoes were horrendously uncomfortable, when the balls of our feet throbbed, or our toes lost circulation, or rubbed us into a blistered, bleeding state. And no matter what you're doing, this painful betrayal by our shoes taints our enjoyment. Shoes also have the power to elevate us (figuratively and literally). There's something powerful about wearing great shoes and strutting down the street, and knowing people are looking, or standing up and feeling confident to do your best work. A new pair of shoes certainly make me smile too, not that I buy that many anymore! Yes, shoes are a friend I wouldn't trade in for another passion, not even while sleep deprived and definitely not for dinosaurs. And wearing these shoes today definitely filled me with springtime optimism and a little joy. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ixKuG5sT6yA/WWMhLAQ2RQI/AAAAAAAAH44/XjJr3L-yhIQ5FYSnylQAwHZmwlGWKH4KQCLcBGAs/s1600/lip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ixKuG5sT6yA/WWMhLAQ2RQI/AAAAAAAAH44/XjJr3L-yhIQ5FYSnylQAwHZmwlGWKH4KQCLcBGAs/s640/lip.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I love wearing bright lips, in case you've not noticed! And maybe you never have, perhaps you're so used to seeing it on my face you don't give it a thought, yet alone a second one! Whether it's blue red, bright red, orange, hot pink, rose pink or various shades of plum, I now feel oddly underdone going out without my lipstick. And while I wear my 'war paint' for myself, I always get compliments on my lipstick. People love seeing bright lips!<br />
<br />
Often though when I talk to admirers of a bright lip, they're terrified of it for themselves. There's a long list of reasons... "My significant other doesn't like it", "I don't suit red", "I don't want to look overdressed"... the list goes on. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So if you've been harbouring secret longing for a juicy bold lip but these excuses have left you nude, let's tackle these three common ideas before we get to some fabulous lipstick wearing tips. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Ah kissing! Well, it's true, bright lipstick isn't exactly the best friend of a make out sess. But hey, in private who cares how messy it gets? In public, encourage your partner to kiss the back of your hand. It's wildly romantic! Or fist bumps are cool. There are also kiss proof varieties of lip colour - but I warn you, they are (mostly) drying to your lips! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. "I don't suit red lipstick" gets muttered at me over and over. If I had a dollar for every time I heard it... Everyone can wear red; it's a matter of finding the right red, and then not being scared of it! The trick is the base tone. Reds come in a myriad of varieties - blue based, orange based, pink based, brown based, true bright red etc. I'm lucky, I can wear most, but some peoples' base tones are more suited to specific shades of red. Ask the consultant at your favourite make up counter for help.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. Feeling a bit too dramatic? Well, it's not as impractical or outrageous as say a feather boa and stilettos at the beach. It's two lines on your face, and you can remove it if it's really not working. But, it probably is. It looks great with that dress, girl! It gives a polished look to your office ensemble, with that tee and jeans look for a barbecue or even walking out of the gym! Colour has a direct influence on how our brains feel, after all!<br />
<br />
Remember that "It's not as bold as it looks". If you're not a lipstick wearer, suddenly having a bold lip can be utterly terrifying when you first look in the mirror and you'll want to wipe it clean off! I always say to newbies to apply their lip colour and even if it's so strong it frightens them, leave it and walk away from the mirror for a few minutes. Go fold laundry or feed the dog or put your sunscreen on or something (no seriously, always put your sunscreen on!), and then come back to the mirror. You'll be amazed how less scary your bright lip looks on second glance. <br />
<br />
<i><b>So, let's get into a little colour theory if you're feeling tempted to take the plunge but want a little guidance on how to approach it!</b></i> <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W-aT-tQJvYo/WWMiuKtb7eI/AAAAAAAAH5E/_serblP5cRMDzKAjXZCY2Xw7_VfEESjLwCLcBGAs/s1600/102_4052n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W-aT-tQJvYo/WWMiuKtb7eI/AAAAAAAAH5E/_serblP5cRMDzKAjXZCY2Xw7_VfEESjLwCLcBGAs/s640/102_4052n.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<insert good="" pic="" red=""><br /></insert>
<br />
I find a bright true red is often the most versatile colour in my lipstick wardrobe - it pretty much can be worn with everything under the sun, and you'll probably find the same. Why do I say this? Well, a deeper red can look quite heavy with a breezy summery outfit, or even an outfit with lighter tones of red in it. A prime example is when I got this wrong and teamed this very deep red with a Christmassy outfit. Oops. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RQuKhz9VkEw/WWLsExqQjNI/AAAAAAAAH4k/LdksINI2XPM-Yl4uYxLvpD5STOCC1OFAwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_3390.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RQuKhz9VkEw/WWLsExqQjNI/AAAAAAAAH4k/LdksINI2XPM-Yl4uYxLvpD5STOCC1OFAwCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_3390.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
But, that's not to say deep reds aren't amazing! I find they look great with more moody, wintry tones or outfits in the same tone of red. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<insert><br /></insert>
<br />
Pink is a firm favourite of mine, and many others! I love going for really bold pinks, like this hot coral pink lipstick, teamed with a pink top. If an outfit has pink in it, I will pretty much always reach for a hot pink lip, or else a very 60s cool tone bright pink. A cooler toned pink is also great with pastel outfits, as it's softer. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Orange is a colour I live for in summer, I just crave wearing orange lipstick when the temperature rises! It looks great with outfits that need a little less drama than red, or have orange tones in them, which I just find suits my summer wardrobe so well. It also seems to suit outfits with a lot of tan in them, for some reason!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MB1UVvnvxBs/WWMj-FlRX_I/AAAAAAAAH5c/u6JNRZFNU6oRu_Y1EQ6OFZQZEFJ6fukDQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4896.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="960" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MB1UVvnvxBs/WWMj-FlRX_I/AAAAAAAAH5c/u6JNRZFNU6oRu_Y1EQ6OFZQZEFJ6fukDQCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_4896.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>

<insert><br /></insert>
<br />
Purples and plums always get pulled out every few winters are they're dramatic, but they come in such a spectrum I don't always think of them seasonally. Plum looks best of course with a winter clothing palette, but a bright purple/plum can do all year round duty when teamed with bold colour choices like kelly green, teal, fuchsia, white or yellow. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_edI0kImfMM/WWMkNKR3r0I/AAAAAAAAH5g/UrJgiFn6XXIgJBWN-01kyoJje7vEgr9hACLcBGAs/s1600/102_4046n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_edI0kImfMM/WWMkNKR3r0I/AAAAAAAAH5g/UrJgiFn6XXIgJBWN-01kyoJje7vEgr9hACLcBGAs/s640/102_4046n.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<i><b>Basically what I'm saying is when you start out, coordinate your lip colour with your outfit and you're going to find it a lot easier!</b></i> <br />
<br />
Keep in mind too the rest of your make up when you wear bold lipstick. I always recommend starting with a more neutral eye make up look until you're feeling more confident and again, look for eye shadow that compliments your lips. One of my key tips though is to put your lipstick on before your blush so you see how much blush you really need. You know you've got it right when your face somehow looks like it's bright and come together. I don't know how else to explain that, but you'll see! </div>
<div>
<br />
For my day to day life, I often just wear concealer, a brush of mattifying powder on my nose, eyebrow gel, a swipe of mascara and the red lips and it looks like I've put a lot more effort in than I really have. You can actually pare back on the rest of your make up with a red lip, or really work some film star noir vibes with a full on face. But, who doesn't love a quick beauty fix? <br />
<br />
Love WTP x</div>

P.S. Want to know the best way to apply your lipstick so it lasts all day? Check out this great application video from fellow red lip lover and friend <a href="https://youtu.be/v86pQ5Kdjlw">NoraFinds</a>. <b></b><i></i><u></u><strike></strike><br />
<br />
P.P.S. Greasy food and red lips don't mix... so maybe don't wear red lippy to your local burger joint...</div>

<br />
A belated Easter post? So unlike me. I usually am all over that chocolate coated holiday of dreams with my floral ensembles. But this Easter was different, and my weekend escaped into a blur of things that didn't go to plan. I won't go into it, but needless to say, getting a blog post up hasn't been priority one these past few weeks.<br />
<br />
Autumn is starting to creep into Sydney finally, after all, it's now May, and I admit I'm not thrilled. I have some great winter clothing, but as I work mostly from home or in private residences, my excess of silk velvet and fur tipped jackets is overkill (though will be greatly appreciated in a few weeks for MBFWA). This dress was lucky to get an outing really! <br />
<br />
I teamed it with a hair scarf and gloves for a traditional look you guys know I can never resist, but like to deviate from. My taste in clothes is so all over the place in the best kind of way - I feel so free these days to wear whatever I like when I take the fancy, after all, clothes are just fabric that express an attitude. And who knows, tomorrow I may wear a sequin mini skirt if it takes my fancy!<br />

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W7Fd9u83PD4/WOHO8sehy0I/AAAAAAAAH1I/LWnRGUyOTr4L9VDNOQKM-ZX_IcioDzJkwCLcB/s1600/PicMonkey%2BCollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="628" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W7Fd9u83PD4/WOHO8sehy0I/AAAAAAAAH1I/LWnRGUyOTr4L9VDNOQKM-ZX_IcioDzJkwCLcB/s640/PicMonkey%2BCollage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So, who has seen The Halcyon? I'm feeling ripped off that not only did Home Fires get canned after two amazing seasons, but also that The Halcyon has only had one. So much for being the 'new' Downton Abbey. I've only seen episode one (aired on ABC on Saturday, Australian peeps if you want to play catch up) and spent most of my time drooling over Emma Garland's up do. <br />
<br />
This 'do is so appropriate for a polished working girl in 1940, and I know later into the season we'll see some pretty 40s waves in her hair, but I like the tidy feel of this one - you definitely don't need to get the curlers out! It's also a great alternative to Victory Rolls and Gibson roll, which I'm making an educated guess that they weren't widely, if at all, worn in the way we are used to associating with the war yet. The hair on this series still screams 1930s. <br />
<br />
So, here's my take on Emma's do!<br />
<br />
You'll need:<br />
<i>Three clear hair ties </i><br />
<i>Bobby pins </i><br />
<i>A teasing brush</i><br />
<i>A regular hair brush </i><br />
<i>Hair spray</i><br />
<i>Hair extension piece (optional)</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LHAI8B3mzBI/WOHIwonhBUI/AAAAAAAAH0k/khxzScnVyEES1wkB2LNzdthLoSC6E0jLACLcB/s1600/PicMonkey%2BCollage1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LHAI8B3mzBI/WOHIwonhBUI/AAAAAAAAH0k/khxzScnVyEES1wkB2LNzdthLoSC6E0jLACLcB/s640/PicMonkey%2BCollage1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Start with well brushed hair, then part your hair to one side. You can of course do this hair do with a centre part as well if that suits you better. <br />
Section from the crown of the head to behind your ear off on both side and pin out of the way. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5DUYXVqZVtc/WOHIs6-x4EI/AAAAAAAAH0c/36cnTG8Z8ZcCwALv4LbfraYNEbnDaGLjQCLcB/s1600/Pic%2BMonkey%2BCollage%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5DUYXVqZVtc/WOHIs6-x4EI/AAAAAAAAH0c/36cnTG8Z8ZcCwALv4LbfraYNEbnDaGLjQCLcB/s640/Pic%2BMonkey%2BCollage%2B2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Take the back loose hair and put into a pony tail using a clear tie to secure. <br />
Divide the ponytail into two sections and plait them, securing with a clear band at the end. If you have short hair, or very fine hair, this do can be hard to achieve, so this is where a plaited piece of hair extension could come in very handy to either weave in with your own hair, or use your own hair as one plait and it as the other. <br />
With one plait, wind it in a spiral on one side and pin securely, making sure to tuck the loose end under and hide the clear band. <br />
Repeat on the other side. This is the basis of the do. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HPX2O05O8JY/WOHIvjF7_RI/AAAAAAAAH0g/X9QLLcaXtWAgKJ1x5E-sm3U_c-bD5EBNACLcB/s1600/PicMonkey%2BCollage%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HPX2O05O8JY/WOHIvjF7_RI/AAAAAAAAH0g/X9QLLcaXtWAgKJ1x5E-sm3U_c-bD5EBNACLcB/s640/PicMonkey%2BCollage%2B3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Let one side at the front out and give it a good solid teasing (be gentle though). This will give you height through the twist at the front. <br />
Twist your hair back, careful not to pull too tight, then work it across the top of the two plaits and wrapping it around the spiral on the opposite side and pinning in to secure. <br />

Repeat by teasing the opposite side for height, twisting, bringing across the top of the two plaits and twisting it into the updo. Pin to secure it into place. Then, hair spray the lot and you're done! <br />

A very simple, elegant do that looks a lot more complicated than it is! Let me know if you try it, and if you have any requests let me know!<br />

Hello everyone! Now that you know how I packed, let's see what I did in South Africa. What a whirl wind three weeks it was! I travelled with Astin and her family, and I admit South Africa had never been on my 'to travel to' list before, but they invited me to join them so I figured I would go along with them to see what it was like.</div>
<br />
Not long after that decision, my mind went into full freak out anxiety mode. <i>Thanks Brain, for the months of distress before the trip.</i> I will admit, that with OCD surrounding safety (home break ins, fires, health etc) that travelling to a country that has high crime rates wasn't exactly soothing to my brain. <br />

<br />
I flew into Johannesburg directly from Sydney - the flight was about 12.5 hours, which given the time zones you cross seems a lot more friendly than flying to London! <br />
<br />
Now, forgive me for saying this Joberg residents, but Johannesburg is the worst city I've ever visited. It was so strange to me to be in a place with giant, architecturally impressive shopping malls, crazy road works, traffic lights that don't work because people steal the cables for the copper, intense poverty and the wealthy, suburbs full of walls and electric fences and barbed wire, and knowing I couldn't even leave my hotel and cross the road to walk to the shopping mall on my own. It didn't help that the city decided to put on a spectacular display of cold rain while we were there. The hotel we stayed in was hilarious. Clean, functional, great buffet breakfast (what were they putting in their hot chocolates?!) but with the service lifts out of order, and rather than repairing them, they instead put a box around them and had people paint the box, with a sign saying that if you didn't like the colour to contact management quickly haha. Then the hot water ran out one morning. We quickly adopted a humorous response to these sorts of things: Only in Africa. <br />

<br />
I spent five days initially in Johannesburg, seeing family members and friends, being dazzled by how cheap food and alcohol was for us on our Aussie dollar, exploring Monte Casino, Sandton Mall and Mall of Africa (look, it's big, but it was, at the end of the day, an oddly laid out shopping centre), touring around Soweto (that breaks your heart!), and going for a drive out to a Lion Park, Lesedi Village and the Elephant Sanctuary. I admit, the Lion Park was... a mistake I wouldn't recommend. For all it painted itself as a conservation effort, keeping groups of lions in small fenced areas where they can't hunt was simply depressing, and I felt like I was experiencing 'canned lion'. These lions are bred in such a way they could never be introduced into the wild. These majestic creatures deserve a life free to hunt and roam, and I promise seeing them on a game lodge is a far more valuable experience all round. The elephant sanctuary was a different experience for me, and I was thrilled to pat an elephant. Elephants are one of my favourite animals, and I was amazed to feel their hide and tail hair, and walk with them. <br />
<br />
Soweto was an eye-opening experience, and we were lucky enough to have a local guide. He was a great guy, and answered our questions as comprehensively as he could. I was impressed that he spoke six of the 11 official languages of South Africa! I can't even begin to express how sad it is to see shanty towns, and know how rife poverty is, and hear about the struggles during apartheid. For all this is a new nation, it is one still scarred by the past. It was a place I didn't feel comfortable taking photos either, like I was looking at the way people lived for entertainment, so I left my phone in my bag and took it in instead. <br />

<br />
We then travelled onto Cape Town, and what a beautiful place Cape Town is! Table Mountain rising above the city bowl - one particular day we saw the fog rolling in from the ocean over the city from the heights of Table Mountain, and the cloud table cloth, whisping off the sides of this flat topped mountain. I went to the top on the cableway and had to laugh at the Dussies stealing food at the top and even trying to eat cigarette butts. I walked around Lion's head, the smaller peak near the mountain, and spent a few minutes in the gorgeous Bo-Kaap, originally known as the Malay Quarter in Cape Town at the bottom of Signal Hill. It's brightly coloured houses and multicultural feel I absolutely loved, and wished I could have spent longer there. <br />

We took a drive out to Cape Point too, and what a spectacular national park space. We were delighted to see a tortoise on the road, and then a family of baboons crossing. So sweet to visit this time of year and see all the baby animals, especially the baby baboons. They're so small. The alpha male waited for everyone to cross safely before he did. What a good dad! We also stopped at Boulders Beach to swim with the penguins, what posers they are!<br />

<br />
We travelled a lot out to the wine region of Stellenbosch, for the wedding we attended, as well as lunches with friends of the family. <a href="http://www.boschendal.com/">Boschendal</a> was the location of the wedding, and this beautiful old wine farm was the perfect location, what with the rolling green lawns bordered by mountains, and a beautiful function hall where we dined under fairy lights. They also make a good Shiraz and Merlot *coughs* (Brought some back duty free!) It was lovely to take a dip in the pool, eating passionfruit fallen on the ground, consuming pizza under the oak trees of an evening, see the sun dip behind the mountains of a sunset and chat with such different and interesting people. We had brunch on the lawn of Rhone Homestead, the oldest remaining building on the property (1795!) and a beautiful example of Cape Dutch architecture. <br />

Lunch at DeMorgenzon in Stellenbosch was quite an experience as we dined with owners in their gorgeous home. I was in love with their two Jack Russells (who reminded me of my own little pup who I was desperately missing) and enjoyed the behind the scene tour of their wine production. The smell of all those grapes being pressed was insane!<br />

We also spent a few nights in Hout Bay, and what a glorious spot it is! Shame the Atlantic Ocean is pretty much unswimmable, but we dipped our toes in for a frozen, numb effect that worked for pictures haha. Drinks down by the beach at Dunes though was so pleasant thanks to sushi platters and cheap cocktails. <br />

<br />
The highlight of this trip for me was definitely the game lodge. I stayed at a smaller lodge which meant the likelihood of seeing the animals was higher, and boy did we hit the jackpot! I was thrilled to see giraffes, zebra (with their babies!), a tonne of different buck, hippos, elephants (including some that pulled down a tree in front of us to eat), rhinos, cheetahs and lions. The lions are so magnificent, but slightly terrifying as you're in an open vehicle! We drove right past the male sitting by the road with the kill and it gave me quite a shock... Before you ask, I will explain the open vehicle. In the Lion Park, the lions associate vehicles with food because they don't hunt and food is brought by humans, where at the game park where these lions hunt for themselves they don't see vehicles as food bringers, just one large car-fume-smelling noisy animal, so they're unlikely to try you out if you're sensible and keep your distance and don't get out of the car or stand up! We also visited a nearby park for a cheetah interaction, and had the hilarity of seeing meerkat antics too. A stray cat had placed her babies in their enclosure and the rangers had to rescue the kittens before the female meerkat killed them. The cheetahs were amazing, purring from pats and very sweet, but it did make me sad to see them in an enclosure too, and raced for exercise (what they mean is entertainment). <br />
<br />
I also indulged in a massage at the game lodge spa which was bliss. So nice to get to rest and relax, which I also did by the pool, drinking cocktails and dozing. The 4.50am wake up calls for the drives were a challenge after all! Unfortunately I picked up a stomach bug on the second last day so I did have to spend a ridiculous amount of time in the bathroom after that and felt pretty rotten from it, as you can see in the pic with the cheetah. <br />
<br />
So, was it safe? Well, I will admit I rarely felt safe. Some places we avoided stopping in while driving, or travelled as a big group so were a less likely target for crime. I certainly didn't feel a stroll around the suburbs was an option, nor that I could go off on my own and just explore, something about travel I really enjoy. It was insane to sleep in places with iron gates across the bedroom section of the house so no one could get in, and all the gates and walls and electric fences, and it's just confronting to be somewhere you need that. The term gilded cage was mentioned to me, and I felt that. While nothing happened to us, thank heavens, while there a family member was attacked. The reality is, Cape Town and Johannesburg aren't that safe, no matter how you want to paint it and how many walls and security guards you have. <br />
<br />
All in all, I tell people it was an interesting trip, and I am very thankful to have seen all of the wonderful things I did, and meet so many fabulous people. But, I'm also glad to be home again, and to appreciate the benefits of living so comfortably and safely as I do. <br />

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H-ECXaSA51E/WNR4ZSFPe4I/AAAAAAAAHvk/gIBO0GR9TsIqzkBhP9JSJW-R-KJ3eiHaQCLcB/s1600/image%2B%252816%2529.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rTtuajtej3k/WNR4_q9gC-I/AAAAAAAAHvs/9gX5wEKBsfkswSfsBtY554eDxzoj5F_NACLcB/s1600/16939701_10158255858205654_5503776312732068700_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rTtuajtej3k/WNR4_q9gC-I/AAAAAAAAHvs/9gX5wEKBsfkswSfsBtY554eDxzoj5F_NACLcB/s640/16939701_10158255858205654_5503776312732068700_n.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Before my trip I was chatting with some friends who remarked to me that I looked good when I travelled. I did a double take - they too looked great on holidays. Of course, then it came out that they only took photos in select outfits and the rest was some kind of watered down comfort-over-style wardrobe. And I won't judge them for it; I've done that plenty of times myself before I had that packing for travel sensibly and stylishly thing down pat. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My personal philosophy on holiday dressing is "Wear what you always would wear". I've learned that on previous trips and now swear by it. Even my last Europe trip I pulled a crazy brain and bought a pair of chinos for the trip and hated wearing them the whole time, for all they were practical. ICK! I would've been better off in stockings and a wool skirt for the exact same activities. So now, I simply pack my 'home wardrobe' with a few sensible tweaks. After all, shouldn't holidays be the opposite of a downplayed you? I want to look and feel nice every day on my trip. I want to look nice in every single photo. In fact, I want to be a little more outrageous because whoever will see you literally doesn't know you, so go for it! (BUT PLEASE BE CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE FOR HEAVENS SAKE). I also find on holiday that I actually had MORE time to put into my appearance but less clothing choices to make of a morning so that balanced out nicely! </div>
<div>
<br />
Each time I travel I get better at the suitcase thing. My last Europe trip I only packed two things I didn't wear (a summer top and skirt because it wasn't quite hot enough - a mix of optimism and having encountered the same city years before in a heat wave which it definitely wasn't that time). And for South Africa I wore everything I packed in various combinations, more than once - apart from two dresses that were cocktail level and I didn't end up needing as we didn't do quite as many dressy events as initially thought. It was the ultimate mix and match, practical and pretty, suitcase. I came up with wearable, stylish combinations that still looked and felt so like me. So, let me run you through my process for packing these days... This applies to trips overseas for a few weeks, just tailor accordingly. </div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b>Step 1: Check out the weather</b></div>
<div>
<b></b><br />
Kind of important, right? I was monitoring the weather on my phone app and knew that Cape Town has weather very close to that of Sydney, Australia, so I knew my summer wardrobe was going to be highly appropriate to pack. But, as always, I take something a little warmer/cooler whenever I travel as you never know when you'll get a sudden random heat wave or chillier days. And boy was I glad I did as we got a few days of unexpected cold rain in Johannesburg!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Step 2: Where and time</b><br />
<br />
Ok, length of time, where you're going and what you'll be doing dictates what to pack. Accept this fact and you will pack a better bag.<br />
<br />
I was off to South Africa so I knew fashionwise I'm fine, as long as I don't take any showy jewels or items as that can make you a target for theft. If you aren't certain of what's appropriate for where you are travelling, I recommend research. Check your countries' travel advice for your destination, research blogs and forums, and ask people who have travelled there before. Once you know what you're dealing with you can spin your own style to the locale. <br />
<br />
I knew I would be away three weeks, and have access to laundry as I would be staying in homes rather than hotels for most of the trip. This also helps to pack. For instance, I always make a trip to a laundromat when I'm in Europe for a few weeks so I know I can refresh and recycle pieces while I'm away, or use sunlight soap to wash tops in the sink of the hotel and hang on the heated towel rack. Factor this in too as you can pack less and re-wear things. <br />
<br />
Next, I sat down and worked out what I would be doing on this trip before I packed anything. <br />
<br />
- a formal wedding on a vineyard property <br />
- a few cocktail/dinners/luncheons/generally formal kind of events<br />
- four days at a safari park <br />
- touristing/exploring of Cape Town<br />
- casual social outings <br />
<br />
So we can see then from this I need:<br />
<div>
A formal gown and accessories appropriate to a summer afternoon, several formal/cocktail dresses, some cool, sunsafe outfits and practical shoes, and casual frocks or skirts for relaxing. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Step 3: Pick a colour scheme.</b> </div>
<div>
<b><br />This is important.</b> I bolded that. That's how important it is. Last Europe trip you will see I packed red, black and white items. (If you're interested in my wardrobe for any trip I've been on, you can always looks at #wildteapartytravels on Instagram). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XpWT6OaBsGA/WHwfRjOkEbI/AAAAAAAAHrg/gB2qlH9Ly6c_DrixmCB5jRg4JLhf4uCzwCLcB/s1600/travel%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XpWT6OaBsGA/WHwfRjOkEbI/AAAAAAAAHrg/gB2qlH9Ly6c_DrixmCB5jRg4JLhf4uCzwCLcB/s640/travel%2B1.jpg" width="628" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
As you can see this palette was for that trip really quite wearable for the beginning of summer *coughcough* in Stockholm and London. When it comes to packing a cohesive easy to get dressed no temper tantrums kind of suitcase, choose colours that are common to your wardrobe and work with it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For South Africa I knew I'd essentially be taking my regular summer clothes, so I just had to select pieces that mixed and matched well. I decided that I have a lot of red, blue and green in my summer wardrobe, so they'd be the basis of my day-to-day wardrobe. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-n6MmXqUw3Oo/WNRuTe7inuI/AAAAAAAAHu8/0W0vLXiBPsEoEJKxU2AdiFevo3QX2nbZQCLcB/s640/PicMonkey%2BCollage3.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
I decided for more casual/touristy days I would wear some of my favourite frocks and easy skirts... Hence I went for trusted choices, pieces you see me wear again and again anyway - think Bernie Dexter dresses, reliable retro cotton frocks and fabulous vintage style skirts and simple tees. I don't pack much vintage when I travel as I would be devastated to lose it, so for that reason I mostly travel with reproduction, in case you're wondering! For days when I had to be a bit more polished for seeing family and friends and gatherings, I changed up my pieces a bit with different accessories. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had many formal events to attend this trip: family dinners, cocktail party, a wedding, a brunch, etc. I ended up packing four dressy options, and my wedding outfit - this took up more of my suitcase than my day wear in the end! I put my beloved 40s dress in my hand luggage though in case it got lost!<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
Now as for the rest of my styling... I like to take a few simple accessories like earrings, and scarves to mix and match. In the case of this holiday because I wanted to avoid wearing my usual fancy gems, I stuck to lots of fun plastic earrings. And of course a few hair flowers. For formal events I took costume jewels which sparkle just as bright ;) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For shoes I packed quite a few pairs. I know, you think I'm mental, but shoes are key to comfort on holidays and I have learned this the hard way, so I took some tan sandals and red strappy sandals for day wear. For safari and long walking days I packed my converse which after several overseas holidays and general wear and tear sadly had to go in the bin at the end of it (and fair enough, they did well to stand over 5 years abuse!). And then my shoes for formal events - so another three pairs of heels. Is that a lot of shoes? Sure. Do I regret it? Not a chance. I had my bases covered and all got used. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Step 5: The extras</b></div>
<b></b><br />
<div>
Items I always pack without fail:</div>
<div>
<br />
A robe - I always pack a light one unless I know I will be staying somewhere freezing. In reality I find European hotels overheated so this is all I need. I throw it on over pjs at the end of the day for a nightcap in the room, while I'm hanging about in the room before breakfast, or straight out of the shower.<br />
Silk slips - for lounging, for warmth, as a frock you wear to breakfast. I love them. </div>
<div>
Hats - I packed two for South Africa. I am a vampire. Get off my skin, sun. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
At this point it's now just the usual sundries - toiletries, appropriate amounts of underwear and overwear you might need (for me some cropped cardigans), swim wear and sarong, and pjs. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And voila, a well thought out bag. Let me know if you have alternative ways of packing, I'd love to hear your hints and tips for packing!<br />
<br />
Keep an eye out for my next post too - it's all about my experiences in South Africa!</div>
<br />

Harbour breezes, soft pink silk, feathers, lace, tassels, rhinestones... just a typical Sunday for me really...haha! Oh well, a girl can wish! It's been such a busy month already; I can't believe how time is flashing past, so taking time for a little luxury is definitely something I am prioritizing - whether it's getting my nails done, giving myself a face mask, or wearing decadently beautiful things. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Self love is literally one of the most important lessons I've had to learn this past year, and it's still a challenge. Be kind to yourself, be compassionate, be aware of what you enjoy and allow yourself to do it. Forgive yourself for not living up to your own unreasonable standards. Remember you're doing the best you can at any given moment. But it also comes from treating your body nicely! Exercising because it feels good for the body. If you need a day to stay in bed, do it. Wear the things that make you happy, be aware of how things feel on the skin and make you feel when you wear them. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And that's why I am so excited to share these gorgeous pieces from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/EvetteDubois?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Evette Dubois</a>! Not only are the pieces delightful to wear, there is literally nothing I love more than supporting small creative business, especially those in Australia, and especially with a fabulous woman behind the brand. Evette Dubois is Melissa's lingerie boutique, and represents her life-long love of vintage and dressmaking - and represents her passion for vintage lingerie from 1910-1950!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In this post I'm wearing the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/485600752/the-elsie-may-1920s-bralette-brassiere?ref=related-3">Elsie May Bralette</a>, the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/493458456/the-georgia-1920s-vintage-art-deco-silk?ref=shop_home_active_3">Georgia tap pants</a> and the swoonworthy <a href="https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/490551268/the-lillian-1920s-art-deco-vintage-peach?ref=shop_home_active_8">Lillian dressing gown</a>. The bralette in a size small is a comfortable piece for my 10DD bust, though I wouldn't personally wear this piece day to day, but rather as a lounge wear piece due to the lack of underwire, but adjustable back clasp. The Georgia pants are sweet straight cut tap shorts designed to sit just above the hipbones and fit true to the size guide - though if you're in between you may find it better to size down. I love the little detail on these: lace trim and pearl buttons on both sides. The silk used in all of these pieces is pink, though definitely on the peach side of pink, but are available in blue, black and nude too. I'm sure if you ask nicely Melissa will be happy to make your wishes reality! She also has some other gorgeous things on offer, so make sure to have a look. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And because Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and it's wonderful to treat yourself (or be treated!) <a href="https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/EvetteDubois?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Evette Dubois</a> is offering all of my readers 20% off with the code <b>VDAY20</b>, valid until Valentine's Day 2017! <a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bKuqqIODx8M/WHL4ABenwNI/AAAAAAAAHqg/b8RiwyQy1IUE8MUOtFw8ldeAxRo3ZCE6ACLcB/s1600/b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bKuqqIODx8M/WHL4ABenwNI/AAAAAAAAHqg/b8RiwyQy1IUE8MUOtFw8ldeAxRo3ZCE6ACLcB/s640/b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Wowee, it's the Monday mostly everyone is settling back into their work routines after the holidays, and it's time for me to knuckle down too! So many plans for this year, and so many things to get going on, and so, so much to finally kick arse at!<br />
<br />
If you haven't already, now is a great time to just forgive yourself for not achieving all you wanted to in 2016... I've already had my big cry and told myself that I did the best I could last year, and now it's time to go forward fresh and ready to get back into things. <i>I got this.</i> <br />
<br />
But before I karate chop my 'To Do' list into submission, a quick look back at the holiday period. If you follow me on Instagram, you'll know I had a busy holiday period. The big family Christmas dinner. A second Christmas lunch. I worked. I had a birthday (and sadly, it wasn't a fabulous birthday, but ho hum). I worked some more. I drank cocktails in moody bars. I went to Blackheath for a garden party with some beautiful people including Dandy Wellington. I saw movies. And friends. <br />
<br />
And now reality is back, and I might even treat myself to some new shoes, you know, just casually... Keep an eye on the blog these coming weeks, I've got some great content lined up for the new year - from hair tutes to silky underthings, and everything in between. <br />

<br />
<br />
2016 was a crazy year. I changed my major things in my life... not least of all my career path. I experienced ongoing physical pain that has taught me insane things about how the body works. I had to deal without shopping much and adapt my routine and budget as my financial situation changed. I've invested a lot of time, money and effort into taking care of my mental and physical wellbeing after years of neglecting myself. <br />
<br />
But even so, I had amazing experiences and made new friendships with some amazing women. I had the pleasure of being the 2016 face of Daisy Jean Floral Designs! I modelled for other people too. I worked at MBFWA. I feel like I learned a lot of different things along the way. <br />
<br />
I am actually pretty proud of me for soldiering through, getting stuff done, and trying new things. My goal for this coming year, aside from actually committing to wearing more hats, is to being open to new experiences again and really growing my freelance business.<br />
<br />
Thanks for sharing another year here, I'd love to hear your goals for the new year too. <br />
<br />
Onwards and upwards...<br />

<div>
This year has just flown, and in funny ways for me, but something I am crazy excited for is the décor of my house, especially my Christmas tree! I've spent hours on this tree, and I still have plans for how to improve it for next year, but I am excited to show you my beautiful tree. The theme of my tree is a traditional combination of red, burgundy and gold, with ribbons. I love including quite foresty items too, so I have Hansel, Gretel and a Gingerbread house, foxes, birds galore and even a moose! </div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
I've already spent weeks around this tree, enjoying the process of planning how to improve it from last year, putting it all together, playing with ribbon and laughing my head off at my attempts with my mother to get the beautiful twigs at the top into a more manageable form... they came as huge long branch pieces for vases and I had to cut them down with hedge trimmers and wire cutters, and was being sprayed by glitter pieces from all the cutting enthusiasm. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Oh, yes, and the glitter. I won't be surprised when I'm still finding it on me in February. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Have you decorated your tree? What's your favourite holiday decorating theme? </div>

<br />
<br />
Ah December, you're here - and so are all of my Christmas accessories too! I like to create holiday ensembles with pieces that I wear all year round, accessorized with brooches, hair flowers and bags that lend some festive flair.<br />
<br />
An outfit like this is fantastic for a work Christmas party and yet, I wouldn't have to buy a thing new!<br />
I love my Pin Up Girl Clothing Spanish fan print skirt, and wear it often with a red jumper in autumn, or a white tee in summer, but teamed with my red Collectif Dolores top it works for the holidays. Just add some cool heels, a Christmas brooch, <a href="http://www.daisyjeanfloraldesigns.com/">Daisy Jean Floral</a> hair flowers and a fun clutch! While this clutch isn't available this year, it came from ASOS who have some cute Christmas<a href="http://www.asos.com/valery/valery-exclusive-christmas-ho-ho-ho-glitter-clutch-bag/prd/7104563?iid=7104563&clr=Green&SearchQuery=christmas clutch&pgesize=36&pge=1&totalstyles=117&gridsize=3&gridrow=12&gridcolumn=3"> clutches</a> again. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-utFnxC5hbuA/WEFl9N7YDoI/AAAAAAAAHlQ/7gBSo7zemVMWMj-dMRVrz8uA4lTCUflngCEw/s640/102_3418c.jpg" width="480" /></div>
<br />
When getting dressed up for an outing, just make sure you're keeping it appropriate to the weather, venue, and crowd. If you're in a cold climate - hi European and North American readers - then look for something fun like a felt skirt and cute sweater or a knit dress with some sparkle jewels. The colder it is, I always think a little extra sparkle makes it more fun. Oh hell, let's be honest, I just love sparkles all the time...<br />
<br />
The Xmas party check list: <br />
<ul>
<li><i>festive colours like red, green or white</i></li>
<li><i>a clutch bag with definite holiday feel - think metallic, glitter, or a Christmas design</i></li>
<li><i>cute jewellery like a brooch or earrings in a festive design like a santa, tree or gingerbread man</i></li>
<li><i>party shoes that you can dance in</i></li>
</ul>
These What to Wear Where posts are a little taste of what goes on in my head; all of those 'costumes' I devise for what I'll wear in the countryside, on a cruise, to a NYE party, and every other possible place I might set foot. Hopefully they'll also inspire you! If you have a dressing challenge you'd like help with, drop me a line on my contact page. To see my other posts, visit the What to Wear Where tab. <br />

Melbourne Cup day always makes me conflicted. I hate the cruelty to horses, but I love ANY excuse for a hat or fascinator. As I don't work in an office anymore either, I was tempted to let the day slide by unnoticed, but then I remembered that I had the perfect outfit for it so I treated the neighbourhood. They love it, judging on how cars slow down to look at me haha. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm wearing the Daisy Jean Floral limited edition Miss Ellen Fascinator. Yes, it's named for me and only available until the end of the year! If you like it, I suggest nabbing one for yourself before it's too late. I've teamed it here with one of my favourite Alice McCall dresses, and while modern, I feel this dress has a definite vintage nod, especially with these accessories. I can't believe I've never actually put this dress on the blog, given how long I lusted wildly over it the very first time I saw it go down a runway a few years ago. Alice McCall is one of those labels where every season I see one piece that really tickles my fancy for it's nod to vintage style. <br />
<br />
Do you have a modern designer you're super soft on? And what have you got on your head today if you're in Australia? </div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Happy Halloween week! I am keen for this week to be about novelty brooches and outfits dedicated to the spooky! Admittedly my head hasn't been much on Halloween this month because I got distracted by Christmas which is only 62 sleeps or something. Oops. Moving on...</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I wanted a Halloween look today that nodded to my vintage aesthetic, yet still had a whiff of witchy. I have had this dress a little while and not worn it; I get so worried about wearing delicate lace and rayon pieces for my day to day life, but with Halloween on the horizon this just seemed perfect. I decided to go a little outlandish for my hair, and before anyone asks, yes, this hair style was surprisingly simple, but I plan to get better at doing it so it's really smooth and polished.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I feel like ensemble is the perfect balance between Halloween and vintage glamour for me, and certainly made people double take. I guess that would be the black roses and big hair... and witchy filters. Sorry, I couldn't resist a little Halloween vibe on these photos. You'll forgive me.</span></div>

You know how last post I was all... I'm gonna wear all those winter pieces one last time? Yeah, so, I'm wearing sandals this post (hi blue toenails!) and a cotton dress. Whatever! It was for a picnic day at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, so of course I had to wear sandals and a giant 50s straw hat.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I met up with some gorgeous ladies for a casual picnic sharing sweets and cheese under the shade of a tree, overlooking the gorgeous Sydney Harbour. We had some very silly laughs, took some ridiculous photos, and there may or may not have been a parasol fencing session (hint, there was). Now that's what I call the perfect way to spend a Saturday! </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This outfit is one of those left of centre looks for me. Sometimes I like to shake things up - and it's because of things like these insane over the knee Sophia Webster boots. They so aren't what a vintage girl SHOULD own, but I do and I love them. I'll also mention they're insanely comfortable. So, I purposely keep a few cute mini skirts (which is basically any above the knee skirt in my books) to wear with them and accept that sometimes I will have anomalies in my wardrobe. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This skirt almost went in the cull in fact, but I lost a little weight lately and it fits again, so I am thrilled to be wearing it, especially with my cute burgundy cardigan. This cardigan gave me a headache at first. I bought it thinking it would be very easy to wear, then I got it and it didn't seem to go with the outfits I planned to wear it with as it wasn't just the right shade of burgundy. But once I actually sat down and thought logically about it I found plenty it goes with, but for a few months I had it in my head it was hard to wear, and that was quite ridiculous! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am glad though to be seeing the end of the cold weather, spring is practically here, even if it does mean putting these boots away again for a few months. It's been a strange winter too, I didn't wear some things as much as I would've liked, simply because I wasn't trekking into the office every day. So, I will try to squeeze one or two more wears out of my heaviest winter pieces before I put them away, then get really excited for ALL of the open toed shoes EVERYDAY. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've already painted my toenails a delicious shade of blue in anticipation...</div>

<div>
When Naomi of<a href="http://lilajeanvintage.com/"> Lila Jean Vintage </a>said, "Do you want to see the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera exhibition?" I was all over that. I love visiting the Art Gallery of NSW, and expanding my (limited) knowledge of the art world, and I love strong female artists, so, match made in heaven. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Before I get down to all the clothes here, I wanted to say I really found the exhibition not entirely what I expected... less art, more photographs and personal history. But what paintings there were I really fell in love with. I was particularly taken with a <i>Calla Lily vendor</i> by Diego Rivera and the way in which Frida never shied from her own image. I love her for it. I also learned some unusual things about how symbolic fruit in still life art is... thanks for that Naomi!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Of course, you knew it'd happen the minute I mentioned Frida... I had to theme my hair and capture my outfit too. One of the wonderful benefits of spending time with a fellow outfit record keeper is that we are always up for a quick outfit shoot! I wanted to choose something with a distinct style nod to dear Frida, without looking like I was going to a dress up party... I hope I succeeded. You've seen this skirt more than once, but always with black. And as I promised I'd keep re-styling classics, well, of course I had to try it with a bold, warm tone like this vintage cropped sweater. I wanted to wear some cute matching wedges, but being on our feet for hours I went for practical black flats. Yes, I've officially gotten old... </div>

<br />
Well, after the glum little vintage girls of last year, left stranded all dolled up with nowhere to go, this year Miss Mary Weather smiled once more on the Fifties Fair! <br />
<br />
Sunshine abounded, and Naomi of <a href="http://lilajeanvintage.com/">Lila Jean Vintage</a> and I were both thrilled to get our glad rags on and head to the fair. A little shopping, a lot of chatting (and lines for coffee) and bumping into lovely ladies ensued. And of course outfit photos! <br />
<br />
Normally I buy something new for the fair... but this year I told myself to just wear something I already owned, so I pulled out this gorgeous Suzy Perette number I bought last year. It's actually nice to re-wear things! I'm so guilty of wearing a nice evening dress once and then hiding it away!<br />
<br />
Speaking of this outfit, I am putting a note here to remember that next year I should not wear THREE petticoats and a panty girdle. Trying to use the portaloo was a nightmare. Picture me in that little box, trying to hold up three layers of petticoat and my skirt while trying to undo the eye and hooks on my WKD panty girdle and then trying to do it up again after (which ended up with me clipping my petticoat to my panty girdle and having to undo it and start again) and then wash my hands all while trying not to actually touch anything. You needed to hear this story, because... well, yeah... I'm all class.<br />
<br />
It's always such a pleasure seeing so many well dressed people, having silly photos with friends, and listening to the live music! Until next year Fifties Fair, you beloved Vintage Christmas! <br />

Life has been busy the last month as I got all my business stuff up and running and I take care of my physical health - if it's not one thing it's another... I will be up and running this week and I'm excited though, announcement pending, promise.<br />
<br />
I felt so guilty though I hadn't been wearing and sharing on the blog, only on my IG, so here's a post of a skirt I'm not 100% in love with. Is that funny to say? I used to have a similar pink wool pencil skirt I wore to death and I figured when I updated it that this too would get worn in much the same fashion but it's been pushed further and further back in the wardrobe so this was a little bit of a trial for me. And even looking at the pictures I'm still not convinced... It's a tad too pale, and a tad too long. I think this skirt is destined for the selling pile.<br />
<br />
But I was glad to wear my 40s feather cap hat, I just ridiculously love it, with it's jaunty elvish feel and feathers that could poke out someone else's eye if they weren't careful. And I finally brought my giant heart and arrow brooch by Dorothy Bauer for a spin. If possible, I now love it even more.<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've been daydreaming a lot lately about things I wish I could be doing but can't because of money. Don't you hate those fantasies? Hop on a plane and zoom over to see Nora of <a href="http://norafinds.com/">NoraFinds</a> where we'd gallivant about London in our finery having champagne cocktails and what not, hop on a plane to Hong Kong and laze about by the rooftop pool under the constant stare of the mountains, go on a Net-A-Porter spending spree... Ah money. Yet for all that day dreaming, I've been really responsible and not shopped since I quit my last job. It's amazing I could control myself really, but it's helped me realise I was emotionally shopping because I was feeling so stressed I thought it was a reward. Now I'm dismantling all that excess stuff I only wore once from my life that was so out of hand, and I am feeling better about it. EBay has really taken a load off, and I will be listing even more in the coming weeks. But, that's not what this post is really about...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This post is about THIS dress. The Dior/Dita Von Teese inspired La Parisienne dress from Von 50'! This dress is sadly not available right now, so I feel a bit of a tease, but I was waiting for the weather to cool down enough to wear it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I looked to Dita for the styling of this number, and while I admit it's hardly revolutionary, I have the same accessories as her so who am I to turn down tried and true styling? While Nora says I am biased, I find Dita Von Teese a great source of outfit inspiration - from colour combinations, cuts and accessories. I freely and unashamedly admit I look to celebrities with a similar shape or style and steal elements of their style I like. There's no need to re-invent the wheel when it comes to your daily style. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I will of course wear this dress so death over the coming seasons, so I look forward to seeing what else will work with it, and as is my goal lately. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This outfit certainly earned me some looks while I was out. I was so glad I had my sunglasses on to pretend I couldn't see the people around me dropping like flies (haha, I'm kidding). But seriously, this outfit is an example of how personal style, even good personal style, can definitely get you looked at. Don't be afraid of being looked at! Better to be remembered, better to be commented on, better to be asked what you're dressed for, better to be yourself and wear what makes you happy! </div>

I know, it surprises me too. I'm a princess when I travel (just ask my mother about the first time I encountered a squat toilet in Hong Kong). And while I might have to fly <strike>cattle class</strike> Economy for my holidays, I like to have a few little necessities with me to make the trip smoother - without causing security to have a conniption at my liquids. So, here is a little check list for anyone else who wants to pack an effective, comfortable and carryable carry on bag for international flights. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--bJKBcTbXj0/V2i6S_TFRQI/AAAAAAAAHRQ/5pLTPPtXIY8EVMrLEyarD76hPJdtVthAwCLcB/s1600/102_2648n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--bJKBcTbXj0/V2i6S_TFRQI/AAAAAAAAHRQ/5pLTPPtXIY8EVMrLEyarD76hPJdtVthAwCLcB/s640/102_2648n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My essentials:<br />
<ul>
<li>A good quality large leather handbag that zips up. </li>
<li>Travel wallet - it looks like a clutch, but it's actually got a mirror, pen, card slots, ticket and passport space and coin purse so all of your essentials are together. Then if you need to go out of an evening you can just grab this and go. You can try something like the <a href="http://www.mimco.com.au/shop/LF804-1-1/TURNLOCK-TRAVEL-WALLET.html">Mimco Turnlock Travel Wallet</a>. </li>
<li>Sunglasses. </li>
<li>A notebook for writing. I am always jotting down thoughts and details.</li>
<li>Eye mask for sleeping. While airlines normally give you one, I always spritz mine before I leave with a soothing essential oil mix that helps me relax. </li>
<li>Ear plugs. These are great for popping in on the flight, then putting the headphones over and playing a sleep track that is generally found on the inflight entertainment. It's the closest I can get to getting some sleep and rest in peace on a flight. </li>
<li>Tissues, cause those are always handy. </li>
<li>Phone and ear phones - for waiting around at the airport, accessing WiFi and taking snaps. </li>
<li>Clear bag of toiletries. The tricky part of flying. Nothing can be over 50MLs and must fit inside a clear zip lock for security. I'm fancy, so obviously I have a clear MOR toiletry bag. Inside it always consists of: Toothbrush and toothpaste, roll on deodorant, hand cream, facial moisturizer, Elizabeth Arden 8 hour lip treatment, eyebrow pencil and a bold lip gloss. I use the brow pencil and lip gloss before I get off the plane to ensure I look fresh and polished. You could also add a concealer if you have some spots to cover. I also slip two sheet masks in - these are great for wearing on the flight to provide hydration to your skin. </li>
<li>Underpants! Because nothing is worse than your luggage lost and having no clean underpants. Yours do not have to have rhinestones or lace however. </li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k5aaIUnyPHU/V2jDvaqU_kI/AAAAAAAAHSI/cZ8BkuPRZUsc0UtpBxjWwceRrEwtu-CLACLcB/s1600/102_2652n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k5aaIUnyPHU/V2jDvaqU_kI/AAAAAAAAHSI/cZ8BkuPRZUsc0UtpBxjWwceRrEwtu-CLACLcB/s640/102_2652n.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Wg4OXMLBKRg/V2jDyfOyjhI/AAAAAAAAHSQ/RVCMDj9iB-km2-KOd31vFmFuHi85zOZ6wCLcB/s1600/102_2654n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Wg4OXMLBKRg/V2jDyfOyjhI/AAAAAAAAHSQ/RVCMDj9iB-km2-KOd31vFmFuHi85zOZ6wCLcB/s640/102_2654n.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Other things you might like to include or consider:</div>
<ul>
<li>Medications! If you have any prescription medications make sure they're on your carry-on. This is for two reasons - so you can take them during the flight (obviously!) but also in case your main luggage gets lost you won't suddenly be scrambling for essential medications in a foreign country. If your medication may be contentious in some way, carry a note from your doctor. </li>
<li>Fold up slippers - I always bring them so I can take off my shoes and have warm feet but still be able to get up for the bathroom too without having to change. I really should've photographed these!</li>
<li>Travel socks - I always wear these for flights, otherwise I get off looking like Violet Beauregarde after that gum. </li>
<li>A book - you might like to read. I don't generally end up reading the books I bring, so instead I put one on my phone.</li>
<li>An iPhone cable. Some airlines have a USB charging point in the seat you can use to up the power on your devices. </li>
<li>Sanitary products - panty liners, tampons etc. Sometimes you never know when you might get a surprise. Ahem. </li>
</ul>
<div>
Of course, this bag layout is also perfect for another kind of bag that needs all your essentials... a hospital bag! After all of the trauma of being admitted overnight to hospital, the last thing you want is to be without a few comforting essentials. The bag you'll need is very similar with a few swaps. I always take these things with me to the ER because you just never know what will happen, and even if they don't admit you, it all fits in a relatively small bag, so no stress!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LAHEaBjW-TU/V2jEWNAL1bI/AAAAAAAAHSc/eRau_AcU-Sc9Ocz70ssksMamj2_v0ZY1gCLcB/s1600/102_2656n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LAHEaBjW-TU/V2jEWNAL1bI/AAAAAAAAHSc/eRau_AcU-Sc9Ocz70ssksMamj2_v0ZY1gCLcB/s640/102_2656n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My essentials: </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<ul>
<li>Pajamas. If you're going to be admitted, you might want to change into something comfortable. I like satin pjs.</li>
<li>Fold up slippers, because, they're nice. But you could definitely do socks.</li>
<li>Sleep mask and ear plugs - especially good for shared rooms where you will want quiet to sleep, and someone always leaves a light on. </li>
<li>Underpants - probably more than one pair, but make them good, the nurses and doctor will probably see them ;)</li>
<li>Hair brush.</li>
<li>Toiletries bag - Tooth brush and paste, deodorant, hand cream, face moisturizer, lip balm, shower gel, tissues. </li>
<li>Phone and ear buds for entertainment and to contact worried friends and family. </li>
</ul>
<div>
You might also want:</div>
<ul>
<li>Dry shampoo.</li>
<li>Face cleanser.</li>
<li>Phone charging cable.</li>
<li>Sanitary products</li>
<li>Medications in their prescription boxes so the nurses know you can take them.</li>
</ul>
<div>
So, that's my practical packing list for an essentials carry on or hospital stay bag. Can you think of anything you'd add? What's on your list for flights?</div>
<div>
