Team colours

Some people are passionate about sport, or space travel, or wine, or dinosaurs, or insects. My passion (other than Welsh mythology and tea) is of course.... shoes, and I wore my "team colours" today - shoe earrings, a shoe top, and shoes... yeah I added the and shoes and thought well duh, but, pointing out the obvious is sometimes necessary to create a list.

This t-shirt cracks me up, because of course I need to remind myself sometimes to keep calm when my workload is a little nuts, and there's a lot going on with me personally too (like a ridiculous pelvic/back/shoulder issue and a little baby dog who doesn't feel well). When the make up is off lately I've got some epic dark under eye circles going on (briefly remedied with this insanely expensive eye cream sample I got and concealer) and I can't seem to fall asleep before 2am, and then won't stay asleep for a full eight hours. My mind is full of thoughts - some creative, some problem solving, some from fantasy land, others rooted in insecurity and upset.

I try a lot of things to get my mind to settle - tossing and turning myself into a burrito, a wheat bag, Sleepy body cream, breathing exercises, mindfulness activities like colouring in, turning off electrical devices at least half an hour before bed, drinking chamomile tea, doing gentle stretches. Nothing seems to be helping with my monkey mind.

At least in life there's fun things like rose print skirts and fun jewellery, and sweet nylon scarves to dress up a tired face and long Friday. And shoes, my beloved shoes. This pair of wedges I've had ages and I've forgotten how comfortable they are, being a cork base. They always seem so specific in my mind with their colours and print, yet I think in this case they really work.

Shoes have the power to transform an outfit, this we all know. But they also have the power to shape how we feel about ourselves and our environment. We've all had those days when our shoes were horrendously uncomfortable, when the balls of our feet throbbed, or our toes lost circulation, or rubbed us into a blistered, bleeding state. And no matter what you're doing, this painful betrayal by our shoes taints our enjoyment. Shoes also have the power to elevate us (figuratively and literally). There's something powerful about wearing great shoes and strutting down the street, and knowing people are looking, or standing up and feeling confident to do your best work. A new pair of shoes certainly make me smile too, not that I buy that many anymore! Yes, shoes are a friend I wouldn't trade in for another passion, not even while sleep deprived and definitely not for dinosaurs. And wearing these shoes today definitely filled me with springtime optimism and a little joy.

New in

I mentioned in my previous post how I'm clearing out, so this post might seem a bit contrary, but I'm actually adding pieces that really will fit with my slightly tweaked new wardrobe. As you can tell, I'm still nuts about leopard, and red and black are going strong. And I've added some extra bling into the mix thanks to gorgeous new earrings, and a brooch by Dorothy Bauer.

I will be listing on eBay some stuff very soon and will give a heads up on IG - out out out it all goes! And the etsy shop with have some new pieces soon. We're getting there!

So there's that...

Christmas, birthday and New Year is over for another year. So many parties and dinners, so many opportunities for dressing up, so much booze and food. I hope you had a happy break. I'll be back this week with the first of a few hair tutorials, yes, they're back. Let's go 2015.

Making bubble wrap neck wear a thing

If you follow me on Instagram, no doubt you saw me looking ridiculous with a giant bubble wrap bow around my neck on Friday night. My 'brother' held a cocktail party for the his 21st birthday last week with the theme 'outrageous neck wear'. I pretty much fashioned this bubble wrap bow at the last minute because I had made a neck piece for the party with a thousand sequins hand pinned, and doofusly left it at home. Hours of my life I will never get back, nor praised for. Given this bow took me a grand total of two minutes and a couple of bits of sticky tape to make, it got plenty of attention. About as much as the guy with the toilet seat around his neck.

I also carried my Dorset Rex bag for the first time. Super duper love this bag, it's exactly the kind of bag I've been hunting for awhile.

The scruffy friends

I've been reflecting a lot lately on what makes life worthwhile, and I realised that I've been quite scared... about everything. I haven't been expressing myself the way I like with my clothes, or the way I live. Things are changing, and I'm getting the courage up to do it, and the support. And one of those things is just going wild with how I dress. Hair scarf with a giant bow on top of my head? Sure! Rhinestones on my sweater to work? Done. Stilettos to Pilates... er, maybe not (though downward dog would probably be easier*). Wearing victory rolls and red lipstick everywhere I can, uh, yes!

I wore this on the weekend to brunch with two of my lovely friends. As we walked down the street a guy told me I had awesome style, to which one of my friends replied, 'That means we're your scruffy friends'. But they're not scruffy, they just don't wear victory rolls and croc platforms to brunch, that's all. Besides, have you noticed my missing button? I left the house with a missing button on my cardigan. I'm très scruff

Gorman cardigan and heels, Anthropologie dress, Labradorite earrings from The Rocks Markets, Jean Jean Vintage Art Deco bracelet, Prada Dixie sunglasses

*Small fact: even when I was at my most bendy wendy yoga body and I'm talking turn myself inside out do things that made people cringe... I could never do downward dog properly. My thigh muscles are too short thanks to a spinal condition and I cannot release enough to do the pose. Annoying!

Easy does it

Everything lately has been a bit topsy turvy with having been sick. I'm worn out, I'm under the weather, and I just need everything to be as easy as possible (and lots of under eye concealer). This outfit is about as easy as it gets. My favorite shoes, comfy jumper, stretchy pencil skirt and gold hoop earrings. Can't go wrong.

Lace + Neon

My dear friend LN of Talk&Spoon and I met up for dinner tonight at Pony as a pre-pre-Christmas dinner. You've got to get in early with these things, I find. It was a scrumptious meal. Notable mention to the Fruit and Nut Chocolate Mousse.

I was so excited to take this dress out for a spin too - I bought it in London on sale, and I love it. To keep it fun and bright and summery, I added these heels. They're kind of crazy. And, potentially structurally damaging to my ankles. Oh well.

Little bit new

I’m a bit of a sucker for buying little bits and pieces, but once I add them all up I kick myself and say, ‘Dammit with all of that money I could’ve bought those amazing Miu Miu heels on Ebay’. Wow, first world problem right there. Still, these are the amazing tidbits that have come my way lately, whether as gifts or just treats to me.

Wittner heels, OPI ‘Dim Sim Plum’, Livosa earrings, Mimco Turnlock wallet (to match the bag) & Oriental Lace Concorde Clip, kikki.K notepads and pencils.

Black glitter

Remember I mentioned The Iconic a few posts back? Well, I ordered the black glitter flats I had my eye on. They're super comfortable and sparkly, and arrived overnight with free shipping, so that was a huge plus too. I'm pretty chuffed on that front.

Because I love my shoes so much, and I want to give all my Australian readers a little pressie, The Iconic team have been nice enough offer a little discount. All you have to do is spend a minimum of $99, pop in the discount code XMAS04, and you'll get $50 off! This code is valid until 31/12/11, and is one per person. Go on, why not treat yourself to a little something special for Christmas?

Quite Iconic indeed!

One of the things I love about Australia is our unique style - we have diverse fashion tastes. Being in the opposite hemisphere to most of the major fashion houses, we've had to take our twist on things.

Melbourne is well known as the city of monochromatic dress sense - black and white all the way. Sydney is a little different in style - we are a more relaxed bunch, all for the laid-back approach where no one takes themselves seriously. From the hipster looks of the Inner Western suburbs to the ultra kawaii of the South West, we see a distinct blend.

Recently, the lovely people over at THE ICONIC contacted me to let me know about this fabulous and Australian focused fashion store. I was in love almost instantly. Seeing labels including Peeptoe, Nicola Finetti, Minty Meets Munt and my all time favorite shoe label, Senso, pop up made me a little giddy. Even though I'm a vintage girl at heart, I really am trying to shop 'locally' these days. We've got some great talent here and there's some worthwhile investment pieces taunting me from the shop.

So what would I buy if I had all the money in the world? These five things, of course!

1.
'Jurgen Teller' dress from Ellery, $719.

2.
'50's Sleeveless Shirt' from Neuw, $99.95.

3.
'Elrie' from Senso, $139.

4.
'Jersey Drape Dress' from Nicola Finetti, $389.

5.
'Sabina' from Senso, $239.

So, what would you pick? Any pieces you're hankering for? Let me know.

P.S. THE ICONIC offers free Australia wide shipping and 3 hour express shipping. I can't argue with that.

A few of my favorite things

I've been home from work with the flu again. I hate being away from doing everything I normally do. And I hate not being able to get dressed. But I try to cheer myself by surrounding myself with a few of my favorite things (ok, now I'm humming it!).

I only wear three prefumes. I love these three so much that I have back up bottles so I never run out. From what I've heard though Anna Sui has been discontinued, which I hope isn't true. But just in case I bought an extra two bottles for myself this week. I can't really defend myself on that count. Whenever I'm sick though, I like to have a bath with the Chanel No.5 bath gel, lather myself in the Velvet Body Cream and then spritz the perfume on and feel slightly less disgusting in bed.

This rather worn out specimen of a polar bear is Teddy Russ. He's been my companion since I was a little girl, and he's a bit worse for wear. He's been restuffed at least once, and he's lost patches of hair, but he's probably the first thing I'd grab in a house fire. Apart from my dog, of course.

These are my new shoes. The Beatrix heels from Wittner. They look so damn good with 50s style dresses and skirts. They're just too pretty to look at - all shiney patent and pointy toed.

I know you've seen the icecube necklace before, but these are a few of my other favorites. They're art deco which you know I'm nuts for. From left clockwise, Creme Caramel 20s necklace and Ice Cube Necklace both from Jean Jean Vintage, the paste bow necklace was a gift, and the rhinestone necklace is from Decoschmeco.

70s wedge heels from Maries Vintage. I love these so damn much. At the present in fact I'm crazy about all 70s wood heeled shoes. I'm just waiting for warmer weather to wear them so my toes don't freeze off.

What are your favorite things that make you feel better when you're sick?

Pink

Plaid? Pink? Clogs? Yes. I love these baby pink Karla Spetic heels so much. They go with winter pencil skirts or sun dresses and they're baby pink. Did I mention that?

I left my heart in Max & Co

This weekend I made the mistake of going into the delicious and divine Max & Co and falling in love with a number of items, but mainly outfit 1. It's calling me. Shame my bank balance isn't responding in the same favourable manner...

Outfit 1: My ultimate winter in the country outfit!

Outfit 2: A bit of a work outfit, yes? I can't believe how 60s this cape coat is... in fact, it's not far off one currently on Dear Golden Vintage!
